OHL star John Tavares is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in Friday night’s NHL draft.
Who is this guy? Here are some facts about John Tavares.
Tavares is considered the best center prospect since Sidney Crosby. However, many scouts see Tavares as a tweener, with some saying his best position is center, while others say it is centre.
In 2007, Tavares broke Wayne Gretzky’s OHL record for goals by a 16 year-old with 72. Gretzky still holds the OHL record for most goals by a female.
Tavares is of Polish and Portuguese ancestry. Tavares was able to intimidate many players in juniors by referring to himself as a Polturgeist.
Tavares’ uncle, also named John Tavares, is the all-time leading scorer in National Lacrosse League history. John Tavares’ mom, possibly also named John Tavares, may or not be the all-time something or other in another sports thing that no one gives a crap about or whatever, etc.
The phenom has most often been compared favorably to hockey legends Mike Bossy and Gordie Howe, while his biggest liability is said to be his lack of speed. Scouts and coaches have begun urging Tavares to model his game after players who are younger than 50.
Tavares says he grew up a diehard Toronto Maple Leafs fan. The walls of Tavares’ bedroom in recent years have been lined with posters of Maple Leafs stars such as … umm … Alexei Ponikarovsky? Do they make posters of Alexei Ponikarovsky? No? What about tears? Do they make posters of tears?
